International Yoga Day: Beyond the Celebration

Every year on June 21, millions of people celebrate yoga. Yet just a few days later, many return to the same stress, unhealthy habits, and neglected well-being.

This year, a visit to an old-age home made me question whether we truly understand the purpose of yoga !!!

Recently, while conducting a Yoga Day session at an old-age home, I encountered a reality that left a deep impression on me.
Many senior citizens were living with age-related neurological disorders, balance problems, Parkinson’s disease, dementia, anxiety, and loneliness. Some struggled to walk, some had forgotten names and memories, while others simply longed for someone to listen to them.

As I listened to their stories, I realized that many of the challenges they faced were not only physical but also emotional. Loneliness, anxiety, and loss of independence often weighed as heavily as illness itself. It made me reflect on the role yoga can play beyond physical fitness.

What they go through is difficult to describe. Witnessing their daily challenges gave me goosebumps and, above all, made me realize how kind life has been to many of us. Beyond a certain age, it seems society often stops paying attention to the silent struggles of our elders.

As a practitioner of yoga, meditation, and natural healing, I could not help but wonder: are we using yoga merely to celebrate a day, or to serve humanity?

Perhaps the true success of International Yoga Day should not be measured by the number of events held, but by the number of lives touched throughout the year.

Because yoga was never meant for a day.

It was meant for life—and for every stage of life.
